The seven Oporto dipping sauces

The range covers every mood: Lemon & Herb, Prego, Original Chilli, Extremo Picante, Garlic, Mayo and the O Sauce. Lemon & Herb and Prego are the lightest at 310 kJ and 331 kJ. Garlic is the richest at 812 kJ. Mayo and Original Chilli tie on energy at 611 kJ each, while Extremo Picante sits at 519 kJ. Our pairings below are taste suggestions, not rules, so treat them as a starting point.

Every dipping sauce shares the same price, so choosing is purely about flavour and, for some people, kilojoules. Garlic and Mayo are the creamy pair, while Prego and Original Chilli bring tang and heat.

O Sauce is the newer addition, a creamy paprika and garlic style sauce that also features in the O Burger. It sits mid range on energy at 590 kJ.

Pairings we keep coming back to

Flame grilled chicken loves Garlic. A Quarter Chicken basted in Original Chilli with a Garlic dip on the side balances heat with something cool and creamy. On a Lemon & Herb bird, Prego adds a tangy lift. Spicy Rice pairs nicely with Lemon & Herb for people who want flavour without more heat on top of the rice.

Crispy Wings at from $6.50 suit the O Sauce or Mayo, since crunchy coating and creamy dips work together. Chips go with almost anything, but Original Chilli is the old school Oporto choice.

For heat seekers, Extremo Picante as a dip turns a mild Whole Chicken into a hot one for just the people who want it.

Oporto sauce for the home pantry

Two flavours come in jars: the Original Chilli Sauce Jar and the Prego Sauce Jar, both $10.00. They suit home cooks who want the Oporto taste on a barbecue or a weeknight stir fry. The Prego jar reads 3,523 kJ for the whole jar. Store it as the label says once opened, and use it as a marinade or a quick sauce for a weeknight dinner at home.

A jar is sold as a pantry item, not a dip, so its kJ figure covers the whole jar. The Original Chilli jar reads 4,640 kJ in total; a spoonful on dinner is only a small part of that. Each jar shares its name with one of the dipping sauce flavours.

Jars also make a good gift for fans who live far from a store. Check the label for serving size, since Oporto lists the whole jar's energy in its menu data.
