Close calls the comparison settles

Bondi Burger against O Burger is the classic. The Bondi sits at from $10.00 and from 2,238 kJ; the O Burger at from $10.20 and from 2,270 kJ. Near twins on energy, so the choice comes down to the sauce you like. Both burgers carry chicken breast fillet, lettuce, cheese and mayo, which is why the energy figures sit so close together.

The Otropo Burger shows a bigger jump. At from 2,971 kJ it carries noticeably more energy than either, partly thanks to bacon and pineapple, and it costs from $11.50. The O Burger uses Oporto's creamy paprika and garlic O Sauce, while the Bondi uses Original Chilli.

The Oprego Burger is worth a comparison too. It carries Prego sauce and tomato, and its allergen line lists fish as present, which the Bondi does not. That is the sort of detail a side by side view picks up.

Chicken versus everything else

Put a Half Chicken at $13.50 against the Quarter Chicken Box at $17.00. The box costs more and lands at 4,042 kJ because it adds Chips, Pita & Dip and a drink, while the Half Chicken reads 2,481 kJ as plain chicken. More chicken, less extra. The comparison view makes this sort of value maths obvious without any mental arithmetic at the counter.

Snack against main works too. Crispy Wings at from 1,799 kJ carry more energy than a Quarter Chicken at 1,238 kJ, a gap many people do not expect from a snack.

The Whole Chicken against the Half Chicken is pure maths. At $20.00 and $13.50, the whole bird costs less than two halves, so a pair sharing chicken does better with one Whole Chicken.

Tips for a useful comparison

Compare like with like where you can. A Chicken Rappa at 1,761 kJ against a Pulled Chicken Bowl at 2,397 kJ is a fair lunch question; a Whole Chicken against Chips is not. A small difference in kJ between two similar items usually comes down to sauce, cheese or bacon, and the item pages list what is inside each one.

Read the allergen rows closely. Similar looking items can differ on the chart, and items missing from it show a gap rather than a clean result. Prices can vary by store. Note which fields matter to you before comparing, and read those rows first.

Use comparisons to settle group orders as well. Show two options on one screen and the table usually agrees within a minute, instead of reading the board out loud.
